While Southern California prepares for the first major storm of the season, residents affected by the Eaton and Palisades fires are bracing for the possibility of further trauma to their properties.
Two fires destroyed thousands of buildings and left behind rubble as residents evacuated. The remains of buildings that were once homes and stores now pose a threat to the public in the form of landslides that may occur in upcoming storms.
Fire departments are providing free sandbags to residents to protect their property ahead of heavy rain expected to begin Saturday and continue into the weekend.
In Los Angeles County, residents who pick up sandbags must live within the area where they are picking up resources. Proof of residence must be presented when picking up your luggage.
“For information on availability of dirt and sandbags, please call the fire department/location listed,” the county says on its website. “Please note: Due to demand, sand and bags may be temporarily out of stock. The Los Angeles County Fire Department, Department of Beaches and Ports, and Department of Public Works are working hard to ensure supplies are available throughout the storm. We are working together.”
