The high-end San Diego County hotel says it will ban children from staying overnight and will become an “adult-only resort.”
The Alila Marea Beach Resort in Encinitas explained that the changes that took effect in February were created to provide more relaxed conditions for people over the age of 18.
“This transition will provide a serene and tranquil setting tailored to adult travelers seeking relaxation, exploration and peaceful stays on the beach,” the hotel wrote in a statement on its website.
The move reflects other Alila hotels, including locations in the Napa Valley. This boasts that it is a “sanctuary” for adults.
Children can still come to the hotel for events such as weddings, but are not permitted to stay overnight.
In a statement to Coast News Group, Encinitas Resort general manager Richard Sorensen, who first reported the changes, said, “We look forward to introducing new programming specially tailored for relaxation, connections and adventures for our adult guests.
However, attorney Chris Dolan told SFGATE that the rules could violate state law, Civil Code 51.
“Anyone who offers public accommodations engaged in contracts must do so without effective discrimination, including hotel facilities,” Dolan told SFGate. “Therefore, the inn is not permitted to be restricted from having children on the premises.”
Hyatt, the resort’s parent company, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
