Last year, Highland Park residents successfully rallied to install speed humps on the road after a neighbor was killed in a hit-and-run accident.
Residents of Aldama Street are delighted that their efforts are paying off. Drivers traveling on Aldama Street should be aware of the speed bump on the road from York Boulevard to Avenue 54.
“I’m really happy. I can really see the difference,” said Jorge Moran, who lives in Highland Park. “Okay, good time. Before, there was too much noise and too much bikes. Now I’m so happy they put something in there.”
Moran and her neighbors have been calling for speed limits in the community, saying they have witnessed countless people driving recklessly on the roads.
“We’ve lived in this house for 20 years and there are a lot of problems,” he said. “The car is very fast.”
Last year, a fatal hit-and-run crash occurred on Aldama Street near Irvington Place that prompted residents to advocate for increased safety measures. There, a woman was hit by a driver but was not caught.
Relatives of the victims, who requested anonymity, said they were grateful to the city for installing the speed humps.
