Millions of people around the world pause to mark Earth Day at least for a moment. It is an annual event founded by people who wanted to stir up activism to clean and preserve the planet that currently categorizes around 8 billion humans and trillions of other creatures.

Here are some common questions about Earth Day and how it turned out:

Why do we celebrate Earth Day?

Earth Day has raised awareness by clashing with a bestseller list about the delicate balance of nature, as concerns grow in author Rachel Carson’s 1962 book Silent Spring and author Rachel Carson’s 1962 book Silent Spring about the effects of pesticide DDT and its damage on the food chain.

But it was Democrat Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin Senator, who had the idea that he would become Earth Day. Nelson had long been concerned about the environment when a massive offshore oil spill sent millions of gallons to the Southern California coast in 1969. Nelson had the idea that after touring the leaked sites, Teach-In, which is held on several university campuses at the time of promoting the war in Vietnam, would similarly “teach-In” the public in the environment.

Nelson, including activist Dennis Hayes, worked to expand ideas across university campuses and came up with the Earth Day name at events around the country.

Why is Earth Day on April 22nd?

The history of the movement by Earthday.org was chosen because it was the first Earth Day date of April 22, 1970 (it was chosen because it failed on a weekday between spring break and the final exam, and the purpose was to attract as many students as possible.

Is Earth Day a federal holiday?

It’s not a federal holiday. However, many groups use the day to organize volunteer events with the environment in mind, such as cleaning natural areas.

You can view a list of events from around the world here, or register your own events at earthday.org.

Did Earth Day have a major impact on the climate?

have. The overwhelming public response to the first Earth Day is believed to have put pressure on the US Congress to do more to deal with pollution, which passed groundbreaking laws, including the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. More broadly, it is considered the birth of a modern environmental movement. In later years, Earth Day grew and became a truly global event. Currently, it claims that there are motivated behaviors in more than 192 countries.

In 2000, Earth Day began targeting climate change. This is a problem that has been rapidly increasing in recent years.

What is the theme for Earth Day 2025?

The theme of Earth Day this year is “Our Power, Our Planet.”

The coldest parts of our planet act like giant mirrors that bring the energy of the sun back into space. What happens when algae and pollution cover snow and ice? National climate reporter Chase Cain explains the ripple effects of Antarctica.
