According to the New York Post, Gov. Kathy Hochul said the plan for a supermarket funded by socialist mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani, “I prefer free businesses.”
Hochul delivered the line on Saturday with a business breakfast hosted by billionaire supermarket tycoon John Katosimatidis, attracting applause from attendees.
The chains of Gristedes and D’Agostino could be threatened by the proposal, Catsimatidis later praised Hochul’s comments, saying “those types of grocery stores don’t work.”
This pushback adds to increasing democratic resistance to the Mamdani agenda. Critics warn that it will weaken private grocery stores and taxpayers of burden.

“Snappy slogan. It’s not working, and Mamdani doesn’t care if it’s or not,” Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopaldi said in an email to Fox News Digital.
“Governor Cuomo proposed a plan that was actually conceived to help people with food insecurity. The answer is not a Soviet-style breadline. Kansas City closed its government-run grocery store (and eliminated free buses) after wasting millions of taxpayer dollars.”
Cuomo blows up the mamdani in X’s post, saying, “When wealthy parents come back, the outcome is unimportant. As @Zohrankmamdani said, it’s not a philosophy of domination. It’s an excuse for failure.
Kansas City Reference points to the recent closure of the city-owned Sunfresh Market, which received around $18 million in public funds over a decade but suffered from theft, empty shelves and heavy losses. Following that shutdown, the city’s free bus program was cut.

Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist who represents the Queen in the state legislature, proposed opening one borough supermarket in each borough, at an estimated cost of $60 million. He argues stores will fight rising food prices and will expand access to affordable groceries. Critics can help plans close private competitors, limiting consumer choices and reducing costs that are unmanageable for New Yorkers.
The mayor’s front runner is also attacking the home. Earlier this month, Fox News Digital reported that it faced an ethical complaint questioning whether Mamdani had inappropriately benefited from a rent-stabilized apartment, whilst earning nearly $150,000 as a lawmaker.

Cuomo hits the issue and proposes “Zohran’s law” to prevent subsidised units from adopting. Mamdani said he moved into an apartment when he made $47,000 and didn’t know that it had been stabilizing rents, but his campaign dismissed criticism as politically motivated.
A centric Democrat who has not been approved in the mayoral race, Hochul is the latest founder to target Mamdani’s platform. Cuomo, meanwhile, continues to throw himself as a counterweight to what he calls an untested progressive ideology.

Mamdani’s campaign did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comments on Hochul’s remarks. Governor Hochul did not immediately return a request for comment on Fox News Digital.
