New York Gov. Kathy Hochul denounced the move even though he vowed to “fight against fire” and committed to pursuing it in the Republican efforts to enact a district in Texas on Monday.

Hochul hosted the Texas Democrats who fled their nation on Monday to block the vote for the rezoning. New York Democrats argued that President Donald Trump and Republicans are engaged in a “legal uprising” to destroy the upcoming 2026 elections, and that Democrats will accept the same tactics.

“What Texas and Republican states are doing at Donald Trump’s direction is nothing more than a legal riot against our Capitol,” Hochul said. “The legal meaning means they are using legal proceedings. That doesn’t mean it’s legal, it has to be stopped.”

“If Republicans are willing to rewrite these rules to give them advantages, they leave us with no choice. We have to do the same,” she continued. “Everything is fair with love and war. So, together with our leaders, we are exploring all the options to redraw the line of the state legislature as soon as possible.”

Hochul went on to say that the state legislative leaders in New York told her they were on the board of any constituency plan.

New York and Illinois are hosting Texas Democrats who have been removed from the state legislature to ensure Republicans do not have the quorum needed to pass their district plans.

Dozens of Texas Democrat representatives arrived in Chicago and New York on Sunday night, stalling the vote. Shortly after Abbott issued his statement, the Texas House Democrat Caucus issued a simple response, writing, “Come and take it.”

The statement also described the Republican proposed district. This could secure five new GOP US House seats in the mid-term elections next year as a “racist medieval constituency change scheme.”

Abbott criticized the Democrats’ dramatic departure, saying, “The real Texans don’t run away from the fight.”

Removal from the office is not the only threat facing running lawmakers, as Abbott warned that he would “sell funds to avoid fines that arise under House rules.”

“Democrats who “subscribe, accept, or agree to accept such funds to support breach of legislative obligations or to skip votes may have violated the Bribery Act,” he wrote. He added that anyone who offers, awards or agrees to award money to escape lawmakers could face accusations.
