Hollywood members gathered in Washington, D.C., Sunday, with President Donald Trump, to take shots for the Mark Twain Award for American Humor to honor TV host and comedian Conan O’Brien, weeks after Trump announced he was cleaning up the structures at the Kennedy Center.
Trump, who removed the Kennedy Center leadership in February, is now serving as the Kennedy Center board chair. New members of the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees include Second Lady Ushavance, White House Staff Susie Wills, and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dance Kabino.
Comedian Sarah Silverman targeted Trump several times at the Mark Twain event on Sunday.
“They wrote a bit about Conan interviewing Hitler because he’s embarrassed to be compared to Donald Trump,” Silverman said.
“I’m not actually an obvious choice for Hitler, that is, it’s an obvious choice for Hitler,” said Silverman, the Jew. “It’s not clear to play Hitler, but they chose me, and it’s this way of thinking that makes Conan great again.

Conan O’Brien will be taking part in an interview after arriving at the 25th Mark Twain Awards for American Humor, celebrating Conan O’Brien on Sunday at the Kennedy Arts for Performing Arts Center in Washington.
Silverman also remembered when he took a photo beside O’Brien’s mouth, placing the image on a phone between her legs while appearing in Conan in 2012, urging TBS to censor the image because it resembles a female genitals. She then instructs the audience to look under their seats, where they will find a copy of O’Brien’s tracked lip image.
“When you go, you can go ahead and leave those photos in your seat. The guy who took over loves to grab a cat,” Silverman said.
Originally filmed in 2005, the tape was leaked ahead of the 2016 election.
Silverman wasn’t just a comedian who had fun in Washington at the ceremony. John Mulany also directly referenced Trump’s Kennedy Center shake-up and joked that the president would rename the building after Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s lead lawyer, Roy Cohn, who supported Wisconsin Senators investigating suspected Republican communists. Corn also had connections with Trump, serving as Trump’s lawyer in the 1970s and 1980s.
“It’s an honor to be here at Kennedy Center, or as we’ll know next week, the Roycorn Pavilion for big, strong men who love cats,” Mulanie said.
Comedian Will Ferrell, who previously won the Mark Twain Award for American humor in 2011, also promoted the Department of Education by winning a jab in Trump’s executive order on Thursday.
“I don’t have time for this. Do you know what I’m doing now?” Ferrell said. “Do you have any ideas? I’m supposed to close the Ministry of Education.”
Comedian Nicky Glazer, who hosted the Golden Globes in January, told reporters on the red carpet that not dealing with Trump’s shake-up at the event was “unusual,” but recalled that the purpose of the evening was to celebrate O’Brien.

Nikki Glaser will be taking part in the interview after arriving at the 25th Mark Twain Awards for American Humor celebrating Conan O’Brien on Sunday.
“I think it’s insane not to deal with the elephants in the room, and that’s not comedy, and you don’t do that because it’s right there,” Glaser said.
Glaser said the current political atmosphere provides comedians with an opportunity to seize “a rebellious moment.”
“It’s a simple laugh to say anything about it, but you can say something and have a bit of a rebellious moment. “But I’m not going to make a meal for it… that’s not the purpose.”
Glaser also told reporters who previously didn’t want to discuss politics because they didn’t want to alienate their audience. And now she wants to do more, but she is worried about death threats and doxxed.
O’Brien also worked on the Kennedy Center shake-up and thanked former Kennedy Center President Deborah Latter and Chairman David Rubenstein, as well as other staff for “worried about what the future will bring.”
“Thank you to my people who invited me here a few months ago: Deborah Rutter and David Rubenstein,” O’Brien said.
O’Brien also paid tribute to author Mark Twain, claiming that “Twain was a patriot in the world’s highest sense.”

“He loved America, but he knew it was deeply flawed,” O’Brien said. “Twain wrote, patriotism has always been in favor of your country.

O’Brien, who will host Oscars this month and will host events next year, told reporters on the red carpet that his material for next year’s awards will depend on current events, and content ideas are constantly changing all the way to such events.
“We couldn’t tell you what we could do in nine months now than we could have done next year’s Oscar for three months now,” O’Brien said.
Other comedians who won the Mark Twain Award for American humor include Ferrell, Tina Fey, Dave Chapelle, Ellen DeGeneres, Adam Sandler and Kevin Hart.
