A man has been arrested in connection with dozens of city-owned trees in Los Angeles, in connection with a man who was cut off with a chainsaw over the Easter holiday weekend.

Law enforcement officers didn’t have a lead on April 20th, but some Angelenos were busy posting photos on Reddit and Instagram of all the trees that fell downtown.

The photos show fragments of trees, including 1st Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard, Olympic Boulevard, Hope Street, Olympic Boulevard, Figuero Avenue, Broadway and Cesar Chavez Avenue, and Grand Avenue in front of Wells Fargo Centre and Grand Avenue and Fifth Avenue.

Later on Easter Sunday afternoon, Ramel Cullen Bass issued a statement saying in a statement that “it’s really beyond understanding that someone does this.”

Cindy Aguilar, building manager for 8th Avenue and Union Avenue, said he saw the news over the weekend but didn’t think anyone would target trees in the Westlake area until he started washing the building’s surveillance cameras on Monday morning.

That’s when she discovers the image of the suspect.

“It was so sad to see the trees just falling down,” she told KTLA’s Mary Beth McDade. “They’re damaged and they can’t grow again. We need to replace them, they’re a lot of money.”

Aguilar reaches out to a nearby business owner to confirm that he has seen what appears to be robbing the tree with a chainsaw.

By Tuesday evening, police had issued community warnings with photos of suspects wielding chainsaws. A Rampert official told KTLA that he recognized the man as homeless and knew some of his usual hangouts.

Police hadn’t said exactly where, but the suspect was in one of those hangouts and was taken into custody, but police say the chainsaw is still above him.

The city’s public works crew have already begun work removing and cleaning the wood. Trees belonging to the city are expected to be replaced.
