An investigation found that a Northern California adjutant who received life-saving treatment for what officials thought was an unintended exposure to fentanyl actually took his own free will drug after believing it was methamphetamine.
On October 24, 2023, Sacramento County Sheriff Deputy Marvin Morales was found to be unresponsive by one of his colleagues in the toilets in the Central Division. The corresponding officer resurrected him with naloxone due to suspected drug exposure, and he survived.

The incident prompted an investigation carefully published by the SCSO. According to a 468-page interior report, Morales seized and maintained what he thought was methamphetamine and glass pipe during the halt of “suspecting people.” While wearing his full uniform on duty, he smoked medicine in the sheriff’s office toilet. This substance was found to be fentanyl.
“When he comes into contact with him, finds drugs, finds money, finds something, finds something, I can’t trust him,” one SCSO official whose full name was compiled, said in the investigation report. “It’s a terrible embarrassment across the law enforcement community. Our individual actions are not individuals. They influence us not only as organizations, but as a whole, as we saw in previous history.”

Many of Morales’ colleagues recorded the incident in disappointment, and investigators advised him to be fired.
Several arrests made at a jewellery store in Sacramento have been armed robbed.
“The fact that something could have happened while working, including evidence and drugs, will erode public trust in us if it leaves,” the lieutenant, whose name was also reconciled, said in the report.
Morales reportedly condemned the incident in his fight against depression, suggesting that the overdose was an attempted suicide. However, drug testing revealed he was a “chronic user.” He tried to resign from his position as a lieutenant, but was eventually fired.
“The employment of this individual was terminated by Sheriff Cooper in February 2024,” Deputy Amal Gandhi said. “He is recognized by the California post, meaning he cannot work as a peace officer anywhere in California.”
He said, “Criminal issues require thorough investigation to ensure accountability. All employees, like all citizens, investigate these issues is very detailed, time-consuming and resource-intensive. Ultimately, we promise to get it right.
