House Democrats who traveled to El Salvador to seek the release of Kilmer Abrego Garcia wrote to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, demanding “proof of daily life” after being denied a meeting with Salvadra citizens deported from Maryland.
Rep. Robert Garcia of California, Maxwell Frost of Florida, Yassamine Ansari of Arizona and Maxine Dexter of Oregon flew to El Salvador on Monday after a visit to the country last week by Senator Chris Van Hollen.
“We held a meeting with the embassy this morning in El Salvador. From what we’ve heard, there’s no reason to believe that our administration, the Trump administration, is doing anything to promote his safe return,” Ansari said.
“We were unable to get the necessary answers from the embassy today, so we wrote a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio 30 minutes ago to request evidence of daily life from Mr. Abrego Garcia, who demands access to his lawyers. “And it won’t stop until this is done.”
Republican senators say the Trump administration has deported Kilmer Abrego Garcia.
Abrego Garcia, 29, illegally crossed the border, settled in Maryland and protected his legal status, but was deported to El Salvador last month. Officials have confirmed in court that his deportation was an administrative error, but now some Trump officials say he has been correctly removed and claim he is a member of the infamous MS-13 gang.
Frost said Monday that the Travel Democrats had “officially requested” to meet Abrego Garcia, but he was told at our meeting that the government here had denied its request to meet him as it is not an official trip.”

“We are concerned about our members as well. We represent the people across the country,” Frost told reporters in El Salvador. “We’ve got hundreds of calls. They say, “Go to El Salvador, do something and do something about the fact that the US President of the Oval Office is talking about sending US citizens to prisons here to Salvador.” ”

“We don’t want to wait until things get worse. We’re here to build the job of Senator Van Hollen, who has been showing his family and the world for the first time since he was taken here. “What we want to know is where he is now? What is his condition now? His family deserves to know, people deserves to know.”
Abrego Garcia’s wife Jennifer Vasquez issued a statement Monday that US citizen Jennifer Vasquez “a deep gratitude to Congressional members and defenders of ground justice in El Salvador and based on the guidance of Senator Van Hollen.”
“Their presence sends a powerful message. The fight to bring Kilmer home is not over,” she said.
