House Democrats to hold “day of action” to push back GOP-backed spending bills

House Democrats will hold a “Day of Action” nationwide on Tuesday to “push back the demonic Republican plan “actively” to enact the biggest Medicaid cuts in our country’s history,” after Congress passed a spending bill to avoid government shutdowns.

The Senate voted 54-46 on Friday to pass the suspension spending bill, with Sen. Rand Paul as the only Republican to oppose the measure. Almost every Democrat senator opposed it, but Caucused with Democrats, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of Maine and Angus King of Maine voted to pass the bill.

Earlier in the week, the GOP-controlled House passed a short-term bill. This is known as a continuous solution.

If the spending bill had not been passed by Friday’s deadline, the government would have concluded a partial shutdown. President Donald Trump supported the bill and urged lawmakers to hand it over.

House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, DN.Y., said the bill was “an attack on veterans, families, seniors and everyday Americans.”

“The ongoing Republican economy, healthcare, social safety nets and veteran benefits require us all to work together in the coming weeks and months,” he said in a statement. “Donald Trump’s dishonest, naked superficial efforts will not succeed in dividing us.”

Chuck Schumer votes to keep the government open: “For Donald Trump, closures will be a gift.”

Jeffries said House Democrats will hold “Day of Action” across the United States on Tuesday, “will actively push back into the demonic Republican scheme to enact the largest Medicaid cut in our country’s history,” adding:

Democrats in the House and Senate, as well as governors, local elected officials, unions, civil rights groups, democratic reform organizations and interested citizens all play an important role, Jeffries said.

“Our party is not a cult, we are a coalition,” he said. “Sometimes, you may be strongly opposed to certain courses of action. At the same time, Democrats are determined to improve the lives of everyday Americans and to stop the damage caused by Donald Trump, Elon Musk and House Republicans.”

A Senate vote to pass Friday’s six-month continued resolution has helped enough Democrats, including DN.Y., Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer, to help Republicans overcome the filibuster and advance the suspension spending bill.

Jeffries refused to answer questions about whether he was confident in Schumer after the senator helped advance Republican-backed laws.
