How Iran retaliates against Americans – NBC Los Angeles

After the US bombing of Iran’s nuclear presence, Americans are returning to living under an elevated threat environment.

Before the airstrikes on Saturday, Iran sent a message to President Trump at the G7 Summit. If the US attacks Iran, the Iranian government will activate US sleeper cells and launch a terrorist attack, two U.S. officials told NBC News. Sleeper cells refer to dormant agents waiting for instructions to carry out a disruption or terrorist attack.

Los Angeles, home to the largest Iranian population outside of Iran, is vulnerable to various attacks, according to former FBI agent and counterterrorist expert Dr. Errol G. Southers.

“The danger is that Iran sponsors many organizations around the world and they literally have agents all over the world,” Southers said. “We are very concerned about our domestic and international assets as they are linked to potential attacks.”

Many experts agree that cyberattacks are likely to be dealt with. The Department of Homeland Security has also issued a breaking news report, warning local law enforcement agencies that “a low-level cyberattack on the US network by Iranian hacktivists is likely.”

Southers urged people to remember the basic rules when it comes to cybersecurity. Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and updated software.

“If possible, avoid public Wi-Fi when you’re out,” he recommended. “The most important thing is to encrypt sensitive data and keep your antivirus software running while you work through daily events.”

Southers Alo advised people to be extra careful before downing attachments from emails that appear suspicious.

The Department of Homeland Security also said bad actors affiliated with the Iranian government are targeting US networks and internet-connected devices that are not “daily” targeted.

Another nightmare scenario could occur in the US soil, as Israeli terrorists (backed by the Iranian government) attacked the Nova Music Festival in October 2023, killing more than 340 civilians, many of whom are taking part in the young festival.

“If Iranian leaders issue religious rulings calling for retaliatory violence against specific targets in their homelands, it could increase the likelihood that supporters of the Iranian regime are being inspired by committing violent acts in their homeland,” the Trump administration warned.

When people gather for fairs and outdoor events, Suthers urges people to pay attention.

“If you see a deserted bag, report it. Don’t pick it up,” Southers said. “If you just lurk and see someone who doesn’t seem to be a passenger, report it. It’s really about realizing that we can all be eyes and ears to keep each other safe.”

Law enforcement in Los Angeles is on alert as national security officials are looking for possible extremists and hate crime attacks in religious facilities.

Southers said between Sunday the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security called for the governor and top law enforcement officials to ensure they understand that the stance is increasing.

“You’ll see more local, state and federal officers there. They’ll be particularly careful about worship houses and such. “If you see something, say something.”
