People within San Diego County to the Los Angeles County coast felt the Earth move beneath them Monday morning as the earthquake struck San Diego County.
And many people have received alerts on their mobile devices.
Earthquake warning programs may abandon warnings for more than 10 seconds before the heaviest shaking occurs.
Here in California, the “Myshake App,” “Android Erthakeake Alerts,” and “Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAS)” are recommended by the state to give residents the most time to prepare.
This is how they work.
Wireless Emergency Alert (WEAS)
WEA is a national emergency system used in emergencies to send messages like English and Spanish text-like text to mobile devices.
WEAS can be sent by state and local public safety officials, the National Weather Service, the National Center for Missing Persons and Exploited Children, and the President of the United States.
For example, “Amber Alert” is one form of Weas.

After downloading the app, “MyShake” will send it to a mobile alert that is about to experience shaking.
The system utilizes ground motion sensors to detect earthquakes that have already begun and estimate their size, location and impact. If it detects a significant size, the system will issue a warning.
Notifications can be issued in English, Spanish, Chinese traditions, Tagalog, Korean and Vietnamese.
The phone location must be shared with the application for proper functioning.
Android Alerts
The pre-installed feature “Android Alerts” on all Android devices is a earthquake detection and warning system jointly developed by Google.
The program uses the same data to distribute warnings as earthquake warning California – the state’s earthquake early warning system.
The system also uses a common location on your phone to determine who will be alerted.
