The 23rd Annual National Dog Show Presented by Purina will be held again on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th, with approximately 2,000 dogs representing 205 different breeds taking home the honor of “Best in Show.” Compete for the title.
The National Dog Show is an open all-breed show run by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and sanctioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC). This means any AKC-registered dog can compete. It is known as America’s most famous and widely watched showcase of the sport.
How are winners selected?
Each breed in the competition is assigned to one of seven groups representing the characteristics and functions for which the breed was originally bred.
The seven groups include Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding. Each dog is judged based on its overall appearance, temperament, and structure as described in the breed’s official standards.
The seven dogs that win “First in Group” in each of the seven categories will compete against each other for the coveted “Best in Show” title and $20,000.
How can I watch it?
The two-hour program reaches nearly 20 million viewers each year and is broadcast nationally on NBC in all time zones from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, immediately after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Who is hosting it?
The contest is hosted by “Seinfeld” star and “Dancing with the Stars” winner John O’Hurley. Mary Carrillo, Emmy Award-winning NBC Sports Analyst. and David Frey, who has co-hosted the National Dog Show on NBC since its inception in 2002.
Which dogs have won in the past?
Last year’s winner was a small white Sealyham Terrier named Stash.
