President Donald Trump will give his second president’s first council speech on Tuesday night.
It is not formally called The State of the Union, a title reserved for the President’s annual speech to Congress during other years of the administration. But that’s an opportunity for Trump to lay out his priorities for the year.
Here’s information on how to tune it to Trump’s joint speech on Tuesday:
What time is the shared address?
Trump’s remarks to Congress are scheduled to begin Tuesday at 9pm.
Which channel carries the address?
Many networks say they plan to air Republican presidential speeches across broadcast and streaming platforms, with special programming in the aftermath.
The address will be streamed live on this website and aired on NBC and the Peacock.
Where does the address happen?
Trump’s speeches take place in American homes. It is bigger than the Senate Chamber of Commerce and can accommodate both the House and Senators, as well as other officials invited to such events.
Who else is there?
Members of the US Supreme Court and Trump’s Cabinet will be present.
However, there is not always one cabinet member. Called a “specified survivor,” the person is at the boundary of succession in position – is deliberately excluded from such events so that someone can assume the office of the president in the case of a catastrophic or mass customary event.
The president usually takes part in the event from the balcony above the floor of the house and invites guests sitting with the first lady. Sometimes there is a personal connection and the guests have a connection to the issues the president is trying to highlight in his remarks.
In his first joint speech after taking office in 2017, Trump invited the widow of late Supreme Court Judge Antonin Scalia and two California police officers who were killed by men who illegally live in the country.
What happens after that?
Because there is a post-state of union speech, the opposition parties (in this case, Democrats) will provide a message in response to the Congressional joint speech.
This year, Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin, who previously served in the House of Representatives, will give a Democrat response. Democrat leaders in her message say Slotkin is likely to focus on economic issues.
The party also tapped New York Rep. Adriano Espirat, the chairman of the Hispanic Caucus, to speak Spanish. On Saturday, Trump signed an executive order designating English as the official US language. This is a measure that allows government agencies and organizations receiving federal funds to choose whether to continue to provide documents and services in languages other than English.
Why isn’t this called the status of the union?
By tradition, union speeches aim to look back on the previous year. Trump had just taken office for the second time on January 20th, so he has been in office for just over a month.
Instead, newly established presidents usually use their first council speech to look forward to setting the tone of their legislative agenda. According to the Congressional Research Service, the average number of policy requests for first-year addresses is 42.
