HUD, DHS join forces to prevent illegal immigrants from using public housing

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secretary Scott Turner and Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Christy Noem have created a new interagency initiative aimed at preventing federal housing funds from going to illegal immigrants.

The two secretaries signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday to solidify the partnership. This helps to end what we call “wasteful misappropriation” of public housing resources funded by taxpayers to illegal immigrants rather than U.S. citizens. The new initiative will encourage data sharing between the two agencies via newly established communications lines, according to a press release on the effort, which added that U.S. veterans were standing to benefit from the move.

“For the benefit of American citizens, American taxes should be used for the benefit of American citizens, especially when it comes to issues that are as pressing as our country’s housing crisis,” Turner said Monday. “This new agreement leverages resources including technology and personnel to ensure that Americans are their only priority when it comes to public housing. We will continue to work closely with DHS to maximize resources and put American citizens first.”

In total, each HUD has around 9 million people living in subsidized housing across the country. Meanwhile, about 59% of non-citizen households, including green cardholders or illegal immigrants, use one or more public assistance programs, cost taxpayers $42 billion a year, the Center for Immigration Research advocates for a lower level of immigration.

At least tens of millions of dollars (at least) went to housing for immigrants during the Biden administration, including full-emission stays at hotels for some. Some states, such as Pennsylvania and Arizona, have passed measures during the Biden administration that aimed to prevent illegal immigrants from acquiring public housing resources from Americans who need them.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order immediately after the inauguration calling for an end to the use of public resources of illegal immigrants.

“The Biden administration has given priority to illegal aliens over our own citizens, including funding by illegal alien taxpayers at the expense of Americans. “The whole government will work together to identify abuse and public interest exploitation, and ensure that the people of this country do not remain illegally illegal in federal benefits and other financial incentives. If you are an illegal immigrant, you need to leave now. The gravy train is over.”

As part of the new initiative, HUD will provide full-time staff members to help operate at the federal government’s Incident Command Center, which promotes information sharing among agencies during the national crisis.

Additionally, in cooperation with the establishment of a new initiative, Turner ordered numerous federal housing programs to his extent to comply with Section 214 of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1980.
