Secretary Scott Turner said Tuesday that the Housing and Urban Development Authority (HUD) is moving to make the only language used in all agency operations English.

The move coincides with President Donald Trump’s executive order in March to make English the official US language.

“Following the executive order of @Potus, which designates English as the official US language, HUD will use English only for business and services in all departments,” Turner wrote on X on Tuesday.

Fox News Digital reached out to HUD.

The New York Post reported in a memo sent Monday that HUD’s assistant secretary Andrew Hughes advised department leadership on the changes.

“We are one united person, speaking in one voice and one language to fulfill our mission to expand affordable housing, help those in need, to look after the most vulnerable Americans, and to revitalize rural, tribal and urban communities,” he writes.

HUD previously touted it as housed around 222 languages and had a line of interpretation for individuals who were not proficient in English, the post reported.

Despite the shift, HUD will create accommodations to provide the other languages needed under the Disability Act and Violence Against Women Act.

“HUD continues to ensure that everyone has meaningful access to HUD programs and services,” Hughes wrote, saying the department will “continue to provide communication services to people with hearing and impaired as well as those with related disabilities.”

Over the past few years, HUD has made efforts to serve low-income immigrants who are not proficient in English in a variety of languages.

In March, Trump revoked an order issued by former President Bill Clinton in 2000, requiring that he receive federal agency and federal funds to provide language assistance to non-English speakers.

Despite English being the dominant language spoken in the United States, the United States did not have an official language.

“Nationally designated languages are at the heart of a unified, cohesive society, with the United States being reinforced by citizens who can freely vent ideas in one shared language,” Trump wrote in his order.
