HUD sells the headquarters building half occupied by DC

The Housing and Urban Development Agency (HUD) noted that only half of the DC headquarters have been used after the agency’s building was added to the list of federal property sold by the Trump administration on Thursday.

HUD’s headquarters became the first major federal agency building to be added to the General Services Bureau’s list of “assets identified for accelerated disposals” amid GOP’s efforts to slim down the government’s real estate portfolio and move the headquarters of agencies outside the country’s capital.

At the same time, Democrats took steps to block these efforts, including the introduction of legislation in Congress.

Last month, the GSA retracted a list of 440 “non-core” assets, including the HUD headquarters and more than 12 other federal buildings listed for initial sale or disposal. The GSA has since posted a new list, but HUD is the first major executive agency headquarters included.

President Donald Trump campaigned to relocate federal agencies outside the country’s capital in 2024 as part of his broader efforts to clean up waste, slimm down the federal government, and “dismantle the deep nation.”

Earlier this week, Trump signed an executive order rescinding two previous enforcement actions that took effect under the Carter and Clinton administrations. The president said his order “prevented the agency from moving to low-cost facilities.” Trump’s orders also point out that bringing federal agencies closer to those they serve will help the department perform their duties better, rather than being centrally located in the country’s capital.

“HUD’s focus is on creating a workplace that reflects the value of efficiency, accountability and purpose,” HUD secretary Scott Turner said Thursday. “We are committed to supporting facilities with optimal performance and an exceptional culture of service when giving government rights and working with GSA partners to provide results to Americans.”

HUD on Thursday indicated that the timeline and final location for the headquarters relocation is still being considered. However, the agency noted that the Washington, DC metro area remains one of the top options under consideration.

HUD headquarters is located within the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building in the southwest of DC, and according to HUD, the building faces $500 million in “deferred maintenance and modernization needs.”

Media reports showed earlier this month that the Department of Agriculture is compiling plans to move federal headquarters outside of DC, according to several officials who described the plan.
