Hundreds of thousands of people in Los Angeles are estimated to be without power as of early Thursday morning as historic fires continue to ravage the city.
As of 4 a.m. Thursday, as many as 340,000 people were without power, Kathleen Dunleavy of Southern California Edison said.

Power was intentionally shut off in some areas of the city affected by the fires, including the Pacific Palisades and the Hollywood Hills, while crews battled the blaze. Other areas are also affected, including the entire San Fernando Valley.

Video taken by KTLA’s Sky5 overnight Thursday showed power surges in the Los Feliz area flashing repeatedly in synchrony, resembling a Christmas light show.
According to Southern California Edison’s power outage map, power outages extend far beyond the city of Los Angeles.
A representative for the utility told KTLA on Wednesday that once crews decide to cut power to an area, it’s not a simple process to restore power when it’s deemed safe and turn the power back on. He said a series of steps need to be taken care of before.
As of around 4 a.m. Thursday, there was no word on when power would be restored to the affected areas.
