The City of Huntington Beach is now a non-sanctuary city after the City Council voted last night to approve Mayor Pat Burns’ proclamation initiative.
California is now a sanctuary state, meaning local law enforcement cannot cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
But in Huntington Beach, local law enforcement will assist federal agents in making immigration arrests.
In a social media post, the City of Huntington Beach said the resolution was intended to intentionally circumvent the governor’s efforts to subvert the goodwill of federal immigration authorities and express the city’s cooperation with the federal government, the Trump administration, and Gov. The city attorney now also has the authority to defend against lawsuits brought by the state against the resolution.
