A worker was detained for several days by a US immigration and customs enforcement agency in the parking lot at Home Depot in Los Angeles’ Westlake area Friday morning.
A video clip of the scene showed officials from the Department of Homeland Security Investigation, near Sixth Avenue and Burlington Avenue, handcuffed near Burlington Avenue near MacArthur Park.
“My friend began screaming, ‘Ice, ice, ice, ice,'” explained one witness. “I thought he was kidding, but he wasn’t. Then I saw workers start running all day.”
It is not clear how many people were detained.
People often gather at such stores looking for temporary jobs, and agents may have had the opportunity to confront them following President Trump’s unprecedented crackdown on illegal immigration. He vowed to make the largest deportation effort in US history.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency refused to confirm or discuss the business, but said it would do the business on a daily basis.
“Aliens who arrested the ice and committed crimes, and other individuals who violated our country’s immigration laws,” the federal agency said in a statement. “All foreigners who violate US immigration laws may be subject to arrest, detention and are removed from the United States, regardless of nationality, if they are removable by the final order.”
