The California Highway Patrol has identified a person of interest as they search for a driver who killed a 16-year-old bicyclist in a possible road rage incident at Exposition Park.
CHP announced in a news release Saturday that police seized two vehicles believed to be involved in the fatal hit-and-run at a Los Angeles home.
The incident began Friday when police responded to a hit-and-run incident in the BMO Stadium parking lot around 4:30 p.m., authorities said. When police arrived on the scene, they learned of an altercation between a group of about 40 bicyclists and a blue BMW on Figueroa Street, north of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, authorities said.
The driver of the black Honda followed one of the cyclists into a parking lot on the Expo Park grounds. That’s when the driver struck the boy, fatally injuring him, authorities said. The boy’s name has not been released.
According to police, the driver continued to drive away.
On Saturday, investigators executed a search warrant at a Los Angeles home and seized a blue 2021 BMW sedan and a black 2018 Honda Accord. During the investigation, police identified a 28-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the Honda that hit the teen, as a person of interest, according to the CHP.
“CHP continues its investigation and is asking the responsible driver to turn himself in to authorities,” according to a news release.
“On behalf of the CHP, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones who are grieving this tragic death during the holidays,” CHP Commissioner Chris Margulis said in a statement. “We stand with you in this time of grief and are actively working to bring those responsible to justice.”
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact CHP detectives at (323) 644-9550 during normal business hours or the Los Angeles Communications Center at (323) 259-3200 after hours.
