A Santa Monica couple is seeking help after a 4-pound toy poodle was killed in a violent dog attack on Friday.
The owner walked the 11-year-old Dublin poodle about 5:30pm and said that a large dog on a leash was chasing him.
No attacks are seen, but video footage is captured as it jumps into the action, and the owner’s horrifying screams attempt to pry the big dog out of Dublin, Strand Street, between Main Street and Second Avenue.
“He didn’t let go and it got pretty bad,” one witness said. “It was very violent.”
Couples Alyssa Cluge and Christopher Deetrick said the other dog owners were standing on the sidewalk and leaning against a white car when his dog attacked Dublin.
“What’s even more frightening is that you can see it repeating over and over again in your head,” Kluge said. She and Dee Trick rushed Dublin to Pet Hospital, but he didn’t make it.
Shortly after the attack, the other owners were caught up in surveillance tapes that escaped the scene with the dog. The Dublin owner is now asking members of the community to help identify the men.
“This guy is a coward who escaped. He not only killed my baby, he escaped.” “We’re looking for information. We need to find this guy.”
Witnesses said the man ran to Fourth Avenue to his Ocean Park apartment and heard it with an English accent: “They’re going to kill my dog.”
Since the attack on April 11th, the couple has posted flyers in their neighborhoods and are looking for more videos in the hopes of finding the owner.
“Now I think we just want to know who this guy is,” Deetrick said. “We know we’re not going to get our little guy back, but the little sense of justice is what we’re looking for now.”
They say the man needs to be held responsible and want to make sure that other families have to go through such a tragedy.
“I love animals, I’m an animal lover, and part of my responsibility to own animals is to take care of it and make sure it doesn’t hurt others. This guy has failed,” Kluge said. “He should pay for this.”
