It appears that in recent years, a group of American voters who have shifted massively from Democrats to Republicans in the fiery issuance of immigrants, are actually the country’s immigrants themselves.

A look at the pre- and post-election surveys from the 2020 and 2024 cycles show a 49-point swing by voters born outside the US. The majority are considered immigrants.

American National Election Study (ANES) data from the 2020 presidential elections say voters born in other countries supported Democrats over Republicans on immigration issues with a margin of 58% to 24%.

Four years later, data said 45% of voters born in another county that votes in the 2024 presidential election were to say that the GOP did a better job of immigrants, with 30% referring to Democrats.

The world’s oldest election survey, ANES (goes back to 1952), and according to ANES data, often referred to as the gold standard for election surveys, there was a more pronounced shift from Democrats to Republicans by all voters.

Daron Shaw, a member of the Fox News Decision team and a Republican partner in the Fox News poll, said the big shift to GOP on immigration issues by people born outside the US “reflecting the fact that immigrant voters have begun to be very negative.”

Shaw also said immigration and border security are generally considered separate issues before President Donald Trump first ran for the White House in 2016.

“Since Trump came on the scene, these issues have really blended into the Republican advantage,” Shaw said.

Shaw, a political professor and chairman of the University of Texas, said: “We’re seeing a move towards Republicans on immigration because we’re focusing primarily on border security. That applies to non-immigrant groups and immigrant groups.”

Immigration and border security were key issues that lit the spotlight when Trump campaigned to reclaim the White House in last year’s presidential election.

Republicans gained presidency and control of the Senate, defending the majority of their small homes in the 2024 election. Republicans benefited among all traditional members of the Democratic foundations, black, Hispanic and young voters.

Border security and immigration remain in the country’s political spotlight almost five months after Trump returned to the White House, thanks to the president’s controversial moves to clean up two issues.

With the aim of erasing the escalating protests in Los Angeles caused by the immigrant raids carried out by the ice at his administration’s direction, Trump sent out the National Guard and even mobilised the Marines. Trump’s unrest and movements have been dominating national headlines for almost a week.

Dana Blanton and Victoria Balara of Fox News contributed to this report.
