Members of the Pico Rivera community expressed their anger after federal agents arrived at at least two shopping centres on Tuesday.
In one video, several armed agents were filmed as they arrived at the parking lot at the Walmart Shopping Center. They saw three agents detained him after shoving the man into the ground with Walmart vests, so they were screaming in arguments with several bystanders. Other agents were seen screaming at bystanders recording them.
In a press release Tuesday, the city confirmed the report of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers running operations in Pico Rivera. The city assured the public that it would not cooperate or support federal immigration enforcement projects.
“Pico Rivera is proud to be a diverse and inclusive community,” the statement read. “Our immigrant families are an important part of our city’s cultural, social and economic structure. We condemn the behaviors that disrupt families, spread fear and create division. This attitude remains unchanged.”
A street vendor who prefers not to be identified arrived shortly after detention and said he was disappointed with the surgery.
“It’s not fair to see what they’re doing to our community, our people, theirs. It makes me mad and sad,” the vendor told Telemundo 52, the sister station on NBC4.
Witnesses said federal agents were also found in the parking lot of a supermarket in Northgate. It is unclear how many people the agency has detained in the city.
NBC4 and Telemundo 52 contacted ICE for comments.
