Immigration agents raid several LA businesses and encounter protesters

Federal immigration agents apparently stormed several locations in the downtown Los Angeles area on Friday, detaining dozens of people while meeting protesters.

At Home Depot in the Westlake area near downtown Los Angeles, masked officials wearing vests decorated with HSI, the acronym for Homeland Security Survey, were seen detaining people.

The footage shared with the civic app shows what appears to be advocates of immigrants trying to stand up to law enforcement, but their efforts to free those detained have failed.

When Sky5 arrived on the scene just after 10am, the HSI agent had already left, but dozens remained, including supporters who tried to stop the detention. Federal agents are targeting other Home Depostores that have been acting similarly in recent weeks and months.

Also on Friday, agents stormed two-ambient apparel locations in downtown Los Angeles. KTLA’s rich Prickett reported that around 20 people from Sky5 were taken into custody.

Agents engaged in crowd control as a massive group of protesters gathered in one atmosphere at 930 Towne Ave. in downtown LA’s fashion district. At least one protester fell to the ground as the law enforcement SUV tried to stop its departure.

A spokesman for law enforcement immigration and customs enforcement in the Department of Homeland Security refused to “confirm or discuss the existence or circumstances of operations.”

“The agency publicly releases its operational results when necessary. As part of its daily operations, ice arrests arrests other individuals who have violated crimes and our country’s immigration laws,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “All foreigners who violate US immigration laws may be subject to arrest, detention and are removed from the United States regardless of nationality if they are removable by the final order.” ”

The FBI confirmed to the KTLA that it was taking part in the HSI raids “as the Attorney General overseen.”

“We are sending agents to participate in these immigration enforcement efforts, as we have been asked to,” the statement said. “This includes help in cities where key operations are already underway and special agents are embedded in their operations teams using DHS. Our help may vary depending on what a DHS needs, such as SWAT operators.

In a statement, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell noted that the department was not involved in “civil immigration enforcement.”

“We will not support or participate in any large deportation of any kind, and the LAPD will not try to determine the status of individual immigrants…We would like everyone, including the immigrant community, to call the police when necessary and know that LAPD is there for you, regardless of the status of the immigrants,” he said.

However, some LAPD critics stipulated that police actually helped with the attack.

Officers may not have personally handcuffed people in custody, but they set the boundaries to allow them to continue operating at Aviance Factory on 2415 E. 15th St., said left-leaning social media account People’s City Council – Los Angeles.

“Another clear example of LAPD and the city of Los Angeles has worked with Ice to prove that “city of sanctuary” is always a bull! ” they wrote. “[Mayor Karen Bass’] Silence supports this. ”

Bass refused to comment on the attack when asked by the KTLA, but she later issued a statement.

“This morning we received reports of federal immigration enforcement actions in multiple locations in Los Angeles,” she said. “As mayors of a proud immigrant city who contributes to our city in so many ways, I am deeply angry at what happened. These tactics inhaling fear in our communities and disrupt the fundamental principles of safety in our cities.

Nidia Becerra, Luis Zuniga and Marc Sternfield contributed to this report.
