The immigration lawyer has warning her social media followers after her likeness was used in a new scam online.
Immigration attorney Alma Rosa Nieto has over 200,000 followers on Instagram and over 350,000 on Facebook. She recently said that the con artists are using her photos and voice to target undocumented immigrants.
“People use pictures of me using myself. They post on social media and act like they’re asking for thousands of dollars and say, ‘I can help you,'” she said.
Nieto said the con artist would pass through her follower list and reach out to the modest victim. A woman named Cecilia, who chose not to share her last name, was one of the victims who were scammed.
“It was exactly the same page as her photos and everything,” Cecilia said.
The victim recalled being messaged to the page of fake Nieto who claimed she could help her in her residency. Cecilia says she’s excited to start her case, but instead she was scamed from $2,500.
“They told me via email to send payments,” Cecilia said.
The scammer claims to be an assistant at Nieto’s law firm and instructs Cecilia to make two payments via Zell using email. She got suspicious after being told to send her third payment, so she called Nieto’s office for the first time.
That’s when she learns that there are no pending cases under her name. She turns out to be one of many people who fell into fraud.
Nieto said her office would never ask for Zel’s payment. She also advises the public to call her office to ensure they are in communication with legitimate individuals.
