President Donald Trump promoted the newly imposed tariffs, garnering Republican applause for his administration’s swift early actions, and elicited a wave of protest from Democrats who spoke to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday.
Relying on the culture war, Trump opposed trans rights, the pronouns of “them/they” and diversity, equity and inclusion programs. He celebrated the crackdown on transition. He repeatedly taunted his predecessor, Joe Biden, saying the former president imposed “an insane and extremely dangerous open border policy.”
“My heart is bad,” Trump said. “That’s gone.”
Trump was confused and confused by the Congressional Democrats in the room, shouting at him to not cut Medicaid, and regularly cried out antagonistically at the President, waving a significial mix to protest him.
Below is a look at five takeaways from the speech and how to set up the rest of Trump’s 2025.
Trump defends his tariffs
Trump defended the sweeping 25% tariff he imposed on products from Canada and Mexico on Tuesday, saying “It’s our turn” after other countries collected against the US.
“That’s very unfair,” Trump said, as Republican scores rose to praise his tariffs, so the president said, “It’s about protecting the soul of our nation.”
This is a sign of how Trump has changed the traditionally unprofessional trade GOP, but the party is unsure about the impact of tariffs on prices and the broader economy.
“There will be a bit of a hindrance,” Trump added. “But we’re fine with that, the president added.
Tariffs sent stocks falling on Tuesday, with some Democrats yelling “Stock Market!” Just like Trump said.
Trump has also pledged an economy to revive and denounced ongoing issues such as Biden’s inflation and egg prices.
Trump outlines his policy agenda
Trump spent quite a bit of time on issues ranging from trans athletes to government efficiency jobs. But the biggest thing that Congress works this year is the massive tax and spending bills, and Trump has outlined his priorities.
Trump has reiterated his call to cut taxes and include several campaign trail tax commitments in the bill later this year. Congressional Republicans are working on the feasibility of these proposals as they seek to pass large-scale political party bills that will advance the core of Trump’s agenda. They are still trying to find room for the trillion dollars for the tax credit Trump is seeking.
The president also called for the repeal of Chips and Science Act, a bipartisan law that passed Senate 64-33 and signed by Biden in 2022.
“We should remove the chip law,” Trump said, referring to laws investing in domestic research and semiconductor manufacturing.
Democrats say heckle, wave signs, interruption
Within minutes of Trump’s speech, D-Texas Rep. Al Green suspended him, yelling, “I have no obligation to cut Medicaid.” He refused to stop screaming and was escorted. During the speech there were other uncomprehensible cries from Democrats. At another point in Trump’s speech, several Democrats left the room in protest.
House Democrats group waved signs that read “Mask Steel,” “Save Medicaid,” and “Protect Veterans.” Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) brought a whiteboard and wrote various messages through Trump’s speeches such as “The King” and “Lies.”
Some Democrats laughed loudly when Trump said the era of “unelected bureaucrats” rule was over.
Other Democrats include Sen. Chris Murphy, who wants to lead his party’s strategy, and D-Wash, vice-chairman of the Approvals Committee and recent former Senate President.
The top three Democratic leaders from each room were present. They, like most other people in the party, sat quietly and listened, without confusing the president’s remarks, through the Democrats’ defeat in 2024, moving forward with Trump’s agenda from 2025 onwards, and how it’s best to move forward with the agenda.
Trump is immersed in GOP praise
It’s been several months since Trump played the crowd at one of his signature political rallies. However, he got a welcome from the hero and a standing ovation from Republicans at Capitol.
As Trump said he was engaging in “the most drastic border and immigration crackdown in American history,” he touted the actions he took, and the GOP side of the aisle said, “Trump! Trump! Trump!”
Trump had no olive branches to offer his enemies, so he led the Democrats at the beginning of his speech, saying he couldn’t say they would applause or smile. In response, some Democrats cried out, “January 6th!” It refers to Trump’s amnesty, the mob who stormed the Capitol.
In his first speech to Congress, Biden offered to cooperate with the “bipartisan” goals (the term used multiple times in 2021), a term he used multiple times in 2021, including infrastructure, cancer research and access to education.
Meanwhile, Trump chided Democrats early in his speech for refusing to give him enough. He set the tone early by calling Biden “the worst president in American history” and played the long-standing presidential tradition.
“Everyone here – even on this side – I’d like to thank you,” Trump munched, laughing from the GOP side of the aisle.
Ukraine, Panama Canal, Greenland
Trump lamented the billions of dollars the US spent to help Ukraine protect itself from Russian invasions, and garnered long cynical applause from Democrats who support military aid.
“You want to continue that for another five years?” Trump asked.
“Pocahontas says yes,” he said. D-Mass by Senator Elizabeth Warren. Using the ridiculous nickname, many Democrats urged them to leave the room.
Trump also maintained his call to bring the Panama Canal and Greenland into US control.
“We didn’t give it to China. We handed it to Panama. Trump spoke about the Panama Canal.
“We need Greenland for national and international security,” the president continued, calling it “a very, very, very large land.”
“I think we’re going to get it, he said, as the Republicans applauded and laughed.
