A California corrections officer is recovering after being stabbed twice by an inmate using makeshift weapons, authorities said Monday.
The incident occurred Sunday at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Centre (RJD).
Nelson Barrera can be seen in images provided by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
“The imprisoned man, Nelson Barrera, is said to have used improvised weapons to stab the officers and hit the police protective vest twice,” the release said.
Officers left the area after the stab wound and somehow managed to block Barrera with his cells while seeking help.
Barrera injured his arm and hand when punching the security window as staff failed to drop the weapon, the CDCR said.
In the end, Barrera surrendered without further incident and gave the staff two improvised weapons. He was then handcuffed and treated for injuries in the triage treatment area.
He was transferred to another agency after the incident, but the location was not revealed.
Barrera was sent to the RJD from San Francisco County in 2011 after being sentenced to life in prison for parole for second-degree murder and possible deliberate discharge of a firearm.
“The injured officers are treated at the facility, medically cleaned up and rested at home,” the CDCR said.
The incident remains under investigation by prison officials.
