Murders have been declining significantly this year in Los Angeles, with cities keeping pace to see the best year in that respect since the 1960s.
The Los Angeles Times said that killings fell 20% in the first half of this year, with 116 reported until June 28th.
“The Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed that the recent total has been going well with a minimum annual number since at least 1968,” the Times explained, adding that there are fewer unincorporated areas and cities murders patrolled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“We will continue to implement comprehensive safety strategies to keep Angelenos safe, especially as summer is underway,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said on social media.
The decline reflects national trends that some experts have attributable to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Some believe that the pandemic and lockdown have overturned many people’s routines and activities, as detailed by NPR. As society approaches its pre-patient form, the level of murder has declined as a result, researchers say.
“We’re not only really seeing declines, we’re seeing massive declines and massive overall declines, so it’s everywhere,” said Jeff Asher, co-founder of Ah Datalytics.
