Law enforcement is asking the public to be on the lookout for an incarcerated man who escaped from a conservation camp in the San Gabriel Valley Monday afternoon.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) said staff learned Santiago Duran, 35, was missing from the Julius Klein Conservation Camp in Azusa around 2:45 p.m.
Authorities did not immediately say how Duran escaped, other than to say he “fled” from the camp.
Duran was last seen wearing a long-sleeved white thermal top and gray sweatpants, according to the release. He is 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 172 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes.
“Duran was received from Tulare County on July 7, 2023 and ordered to serve 10 years in prison for Criminal Threat with a Firearm Enhancement,” CDCR said. “He was also charged with possession of a firearm as a second striker as a felon, bodily injury, and being a second striker.”
KTLA’s sister station KSEE/KGPE in Fresno reported that Duran was arrested on a series of charges in February 2022 after barricading himself in a building during a standoff with police.
Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence in Porterville and upon arrival found a female victim with visible injuries to her face, according to the report.
KSEE/KGPE wrote that the suspect was identified as Duran and that when police tried to contact him, he refused to open the building’s security screen and come outside.
As more officers arrived, Duran reportedly came outside with a handgun and threatened to shoot one of the officers before retreating inside.
While Duran was barricaded inside, officers told KSEE/KGPE they were able to safely remove the female victim and her child.
As the standoff continued for hours, officers reportedly began evacuating people from nearby buildings and placed a nearby high school on lockdown.
“At approximately 5:30 p.m., Duran exited the building and, according to authorities, did not comply with instructions from authorities,” KSEE/KGPE wrote. “SWAT members had to use non-lethal force to arrest Duran, according to officials.”
After the Jan. 6 escape, CDCR asked anyone who saw Duran or knows his whereabouts to contact law enforcement or 911 or call Special Agent Marlon Andrews at 818-402-5073. He said he needed to contact.
