California Highway Patrol troopers will conduct their annual Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period in the Southland and around the state starting tonight to promote road safety over the weekend.
“As millions of drivers prepare to travel, so too does CHP,” CHP Chairman Sean Durie said in a statement.
The agency will have all available officers on patrol from 6:01 p.m. Wednesday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
“Thanksgiving is a time of unity, and our mission is to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely,” Dooley said in a statement. “We encourage everyone to prepare their cars for the trip, leave early to account for traffic congestion, fasten their seat belts, and never interfere with other people’s driving. Your well-being and safety starts with making good decisions behind the wheel.”
Last Thanksgiving, deputies made 1,047 arrests by CHP officers across the state for drunk driving. Additionally, 27 fatal accidents occurred within CHP jurisdiction.
Local law enforcement agencies will also conduct various enforcement activities.
“While traveling for Thanksgiving, make safety your number one priority by always fastening your seat belt when in your car,” said Torrance Police Sgt. David Koenig said in a statement. “Wearing your seat belt is an easy way to protect yourself and your loved ones.”
Funding for enhanced local law enforcement efforts will be provided through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through a grant from the California Traffic Safety Administration.
