Elon Musk will withdraw his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) later this spring.
“This ‘scoop’ is garbage,” White House spokesman Caroline Leavitt posted on X on Wednesday. “Elon Musk and President Trump have publicly stated that Elon would leave public service as special government officials when his incredible work at Doge is completed.”
Leavitt had mentioned a political article reporting, “Trump told his inner circle and his cabinet members that “Musk” would intervene in the coming weeks from his current role.” But Musk has long been expected to retreat from Doge when 130 days have disappeared as a “special government employee” in May.
Musk has been the public face of Doji since President Donald Trump signed an executive order to set up the office on January 20th.
Musk was officially hired as a “special government employee.” This is a role created by Congress in 1962, allowing the enforcement or legislative department to hire temporary employees for certain short-term initiatives.

According to data from the Government Ethics Bureau, special government officials are permitted to work “within 130 days within 365 days.” The 130-day time slot, starting from inauguration day, is dry on May 30th.
“Politico has become a tabloid that runs fake news for clicks rather than actual reports,” White House spokesman Harrison Fields said of the Politico report on Fox Digital Wednesday. “This is why President Trump and Doge fired millions of dollars in wasted government contracts with so-called news organizations that have reduced credibility with the American people.”
Musk and Trump have previously previewed the role of masks to be temporary and will end in the coming weeks.
“Technically, you’re a special government employee and you should be 130 days,” Fox News’ Brett Byer asked Musk in an exclusive interview with Dozi leader and members of his team on Thursday. “Are you going to go on past that or do you think it’s something you’re trying to do?”
“I think we’ve accomplished most of the work that was needed to reduce the deficit by $1 trillion within that time frame,” Musk replied.

Trump hinted at Musk’s departure in media comments Monday, asking if he hopes he will remain in the government role longer than the 130 pre-determined days.
“I think he’s great, but I think he has a big company to run,” Trump replied. “And at some point he’s going to go back.”

“I’m protecting him as much as I can keep him. He’s a very talented guy. You know, I love very clever people. He’s very clever. And he did a good job.
