A home fire was fatal late Sunday night at the northern tip of San Bernardino, officials confirmed Monday.
At about 11:43pm on February 16, the crew of the San Bernardino County Fire responded to a report of a fire in the 5600 block of Louise Street, with people inside capable.
The department said in a post to X that the crew of the first arrival engine saw intense dark smoke reaching the attic from behind the house.
Additional crews arrived, and firefighters entered the house and attacked the fire from the inside, searching for the victim.
Crews also used thermal imaging to aid in the search, and the fire department said the device showed high heat levels from inside the home.
To combat the flames and internal heat, the truck company crews are said to have been coordinated with internal personnel to drill ventilation holes in the roof. The department said this cleared the smoke and improved visibility.
However, despite aggressive internal attacks on the severe fire conditions reported by the San Bernardino County fire, the fire took the lives of one woman and one cat.
The crew discovers the bodies inside the house, but both have already exceeded resuscitation.
In addition to his death, officials said firefighters suffered burns during the attack and were taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where they received medical treatment and were later released.
“A total of 17 firefighters, consisting of four engine companies, one ladder truck and a battalion chief, responded to the fire,” the department said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
