Laundromats, grocery stores and ice cream parlors are just some of the businesses in Jurupa Valley that have been without power for more than a week.
Many businesses on Mission Boulevard near Pedley are relying on generators to stay open, but others have been forced to close. The power outage also affected many residents.
“Last week we lost power for eight days, and today we lost power in the morning,” said Jurupa Valley resident Hanna Acuña. “We lost all our food. The food in our refrigerator went bad and our grocery money went to fast food.”
Southern California Edison says the power outages are an inconvenience for residents and business owners, but are necessary for public safety.
“When there are strong winds, there is a risk that items can get caught in the wind and come into contact with power lines and poles, so we are shutting off power to our infrastructure in certain areas,” said Gabriela of Southern California Edison. Ornelas said.
Southern California Edison said service disruptions to customers are expected to continue due to strong winds and a red flag warning in effect through Friday.
Additionally, Riverside County customers who lost food purchased with CalFresh benefits during the power outage may be eligible for a replacement.
