A guard was attacked by an inmate at a California prison on Thursday night, which authorities are investigating as attempted murder.
The attack occurred at Mule Creek State Prison in Amador County around 6:25 p.m.
Inmate Kevin Alvarado, 30, allegedly turned and assaulted a correctional officer while being taken from the shower to his cell, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. Officials added that an inmate-made weapon was recovered at the scene.
Prison officials secured the scene and treated the injured guard, who was taken to an outside medical facility and released later that night.
CDCR officials placed Alvarado in a restricted residence while investigating the attack.
Alvarado has been incarcerated since 2019 in Los Angeles County, serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole on charges including second-degree murder. He has a history of violence while incarcerated, including a 2021 conviction for assaulting another inmate with a deadly weapon, which added four years to his sentence, officials said.
The investigation is ongoing and once completed, the case will be referred to the Amador County District Attorney’s Office for possible felony charges.
