The inmates left the LA County fire camp were recaptured a few hours later. Last week’s second incident in California was stated on Monday by the Department of Rehabilitation.
Angel Gaxiola, a 33-year-old inmate, was found missing by staff around 9pm on Sunday during a head count at Holton Conservation Camp northeast of Sylmer, the department said.
Local law enforcement was called and upland police arrested Gakushiora around 8am Monday, the department said. Although prison officials did not say where Gakushiora was arrested, Sylmar is about 50 miles from the highlands.
Gaxiola, who was sentenced to six years in prison for the robbery, has been at Holton Conservation Camp since January.
The fire service is run jointly by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and state prison staff, with staffed by county firefighters and corrections officers who oversee the incarcerated firefighters.
Holton’s Clearbrush crew will establish a fire line during a wild fire, the state said. Crews are also implementing park maintenance and brush clearances to prevent fires at famous LA landmarks, including the Hollywood Bowl, Mount Wilson and the Angeles National Forest trails, the state said.
The department said the Gaxiola case was introduced to the Los Angeles County District Attorney “in light of the fugitive charges.”
His recapture comes two days after authorities arrested another inmate who left the fire service in Northern California’s El Dorado County.
Dion Harvey, 24, was similarly found missing from his bed during camp count at Grollersburg Conservation Camp Friday night, the Corrections Department said. A search continued and he was captured on Saturday morning.
The California Department of Corrections has reported other similar cases in recent months, but in a statement on its website since 1977, “99% of all people who left the placement of adult agencies, camps, or contract beds or community rehabilitation programs within the state have been arrested.”
