A police chase ended in a crash in the San Fernando Valley on Saturday, leaving one woman dead and three others injured, including the suspect, authorities said.
The chaotic scene occurred in the Winnetka area around 1:32 p.m.
Police said the suspect, believed to be in his 40s, noticed officers following him in a suspected stolen vehicle, a Mercedes SUV.
The suspect drove off southbound on Mason Avenue and drove into the intersection of Saticoy Street as a white Tesla was crossing westbound.
“The east-west traffic light on Saticoy has turned green,” Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Don Graham said. “The suspect vehicle collided with the Tesla, which was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed, and the Tesla also collided with two other vehicles.”
The suspect in the stolen SUV was taken into custody shortly after the vehicle overturned and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.
The drivers of the black and silver cars were also taken to hospitals with minor injuries, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The woman who was behind the wheel of the white Tesla died at the scene.
“It was terrible,” said Maria Toribio, a nearby resident. “That was my first reaction, my stomach started rumbling.”
Neighbors like Toribio who heard the crash told KTLA’s Angeli Kakade that it was a sound they would never forget.

“This is a tragedy that will last forever for this family so close to the holiday season,” Graham said. “It’s unfathomable to even think about it.”
The suspect is currently charged with vehicular homicide.
With Saturday’s tragedy in mind, Toribio said he hopes city officials will finally address the many problems plaguing the intersection where the fatal crash occurred.
