Authorities are warning community members to be warned against insurance and FEMA-related scams after Eaton and Palisade fired a devastated section of the Los Angeles area.
The word of caution came in the form of a social media post from the Pasadena Police Station. The department said reports of attempted fraud have been on the rise since the destructive flames.
“If your home is damaged, you may be targeted by con artists who try to take advantage of you during this vulnerable period,” said Officer Riddle, Pasadena PD.
The scam will be provided in the form of door-to-door visits, phone calls and emails, the department said.
Did the FEMA application be rejected? What La Fire victims need to know
According to Pasadena PD, fire victims should never provide personal or financial information to unverified or unsolicited contacts.
“A legitimate FEMA and insurance representatives have official documents and do not put pressure on immediate decisions,” the department said.
All phone numbers related to FEMA or private insurance providers can be verified by calling the official phone number. These are listed on FEMA or specific insurance provider websites.
“Trust your instincts,” Pasadena PD said. “If someone is rushing you, threatening you, or asking for payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, that’s a red flag.”
