Tommy Lane of Staten Island, New York, decided to build a chicken coop last spring to ensure it stabilizes fresh eggs.

The avian flu outbreak averaged $4.15 per dozen in December, an increase of 65% from a year ago, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In places like California, the prices are even higher, costing around $9 for a dozen.
The prices are so high that Waffle House recently added $0.50 per extra egg charge to all menu items.
Lane, who has four chickens that produce about one egg every day, estimates they save about $120 a month.
“There’s no need to worry about a lack of eggs. They’re always here for me,” he said.
Backyard chicken trends aren’t limited to expensive cities like New York.

The cost of a startup can vary widely from about $200 to $2,000 for the shed alone, according to the Associated Press. Feeders and water dispensers range from around $8 to $50 or more, depending on the size and type.
However, these costs may be valuable over time. The agricultural sector predicts egg prices will rise by another 20% this year.
Since January 2022, more than 156 million commercials, backyards and wild birds have been affected by the virus.
