Americans celebrate June on Thursday, marking the day the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free.
For generations, black Americans have recognized the end of one of the darkest chapters in American history with Joy, in the form of parades, street festivals, musical performances, or culinary events.
The US government was slow to accept this opportunity – it was in 2021 that President Joe Biden signed a bill passed by Congress to set aside in June as a federal holiday.
Here’s what you need to know about this federal holiday and what it means to US workers on June 19th this year.
What is June?
The celebration began with the freed enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. The Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in the South in 1863, but it was not possible to enforce many places until the end of the civil war in 1865.
Major General Gordon Granger and his forces arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865, with news that the war had ended and the slaves had been enslaved. That was more than two months after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Commonwealth of Ulysses S. Grant in Virginia.
Granger said: “The Texans are informed that all slaves are free, as per the declarations from the American executives. This includes the absolute equality of property between former masters and slaves, and the relationships that exist exist between employers and employed workers.”
The following year, the current people began celebrating in June in Galveston. Since then, its compliance has continued around the country and around the world. The event includes measurements for concerts, parades and Emancipation Declaration.
June is the day in 1865, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued it, and the Emancipation Proclamation was brought to the enslaved Texas. After June became a federal holiday, more businesses have been involved in promoting and celebrating it, but not all efforts have been well received. Why is it called in June?
The term June is Porte Manteau, the words “June” and “No. 19.” Holidays are also known as Independence Day or Freedom Day in June.
Is the post office open in June?
The US postal service was closed on June 19th and there will be no postal delivery.
Do you receive a UPS or FedEx package?
According to the company’s website, UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available, and the store location will be open on June 19th.
Is the bank open in June?
The Federal Reserve and the New York Stock Exchange will close on Thursday, June 19th.
As most financial institutions follow the Fed’s holiday schedule, most banks are also expected to close on Thursday.
