The joint operations between China and Russia and the threat from North Korea pose the biggest threat to the world order since World War II, Japan’s Ministry of Defense says in a new document.
“The existing global peace order is seriously challenged and Japan is found to be in the most serious and complicated security environment since the war,” Defense Minister Nakatani said in an annual document. “The international community is in a new era of crisis as it faces its biggest challenge since the end of World War II.”
The world’s biggest threat is concentrated in the Indo-Pacific, where Japan is located, and is expected to worsen in the coming years, he added.
And in a question about what role Japan will play if a war breaks out between the United States and China through Taiwan, the minister called the United States “an important pillar of our national security policy and the foundation for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.”

Jiang Bin, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Defense, said on Wednesday that Japan is “exaggerating the “Chinese threat” and severely interfering with China’s internal affairs.”
Elbridge Colby, Pentagon policy director, praised the report as a “significant, clear-eyed strategic assessment.”
The report comes days after Japan accused China of putting a close collision at risk by flying abnormally close to Tokyo’s intelligence reporting agency. China accused Japan of flying near China’s airspace and spying.
The presence of Chinese warships off the coast of southwest Japan has tripled over the past three years, including the waters between Taiwan and neighboring Japan’s Yonagni Island, the paper says.
Russia is engaged in joint activities with China, involving aircraft and vessels.
Meanwhile, North Korea has raised a “increasingly serious and imminent threat” to Japan’s security and has developed missiles that can transport nuclear warheads to intercontinental missiles that can reach Japanese territory and the US homeland.

In return, Japan continues to strengthen its chains on the South West Island with long-range cruise missiles, including US-made tomahawks.
According to the paper, the overall military balance between China and Taiwan is “quickly tilting China’s favor” and Taiwan’s defense capabilities are increasingly outperforming.

“There is growing concern over China’s pursuit of unity through grey zone military operations,” the paper states, referring to progressive invasion tactics without the start of a full-scale war.
Japan believes Taiwan’s safety is directly linked to itself. The instability of the Taiwan Strait can disrupt sea lines, which are important to Japan.
