The rise of D-Texas’ Jasmine Crockett, which sparked controversy earlier this year for his remarks about Elon Musk and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, officially launched a bid to rank members on Tuesday.
“These are not normal times, this can’t be a normal business moment,” Crockett said in an X’s post.
The House Oversight Committee is responsible for federal government administration and President Donald Trump holding responsibility in Congress. D-Va, the final ranking member of the committee. Rep. Jerry Connolly died on May 21 after fighting cancer. He was elected to that position in 2023.
“Since the launch of the 119th Congress, Jerry Connolly, a late ranking member, has led the Overseas Democrats in the fight to hold the Trump administration accountable, and it has been my clear privilege and absolute honor to serve with him as a deputy ranking member.”

Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced a special election on Tuesday to replace his home Connolly. His death on May 21 also left a leadership gap on the House Oversight Committee, with House Democrats currently being tasked with selecting new leaders to challenge Trump.
Connolly has designated Rep. Stephen Lynch as interim ranking member on D-Mass, and the race continues among House Democrats due to his open leadership position. California Democratic leader Robert Garcia and Maryland’s Quisi Muhume have announced their own bids to lead the committee.
Crockett has indicated that she intends to run for ranking members, and a Texas Senator’s letter to the Democrats on Tuesday made her bid official.

“Americans are demanding a more strategic, aggressive and energetic fight at this moment,” Crockett said.
“Understanding the intense urgency, I am officially announcing my candidacy for ranking members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, standing up for American families, defending the constitution and the rule of law, focusing on the government serving people rather than the minority of privilege.”
Crockett took the national stage for a viral moment in the House, building name recognition among Democrats and Republicans’ reputation.
Earlier this year, Attorney General Pam Bondy accused Crockett of “life-threatening” and said he should apologise for Elon Musk and his rhetoric against government efficiency (DOGE).
Crockett said she was referring to “non-violent” resistance.
Crockett was also criticized this year for calling R-Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who is on the wheelchair “hot wheel governor.” She returned the comment after her comments were circulating through word of mouth and called anger a “distraction.”
And last year, Texas lawmakers ruled when the campaign trademarked the phrase “Blace Blonde, Bad Build, Butch Body,” which they made their trademark after an oral controversy with R-Ga Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Her viral moments attracted the attention of Trump, who called Crockett a “low IQ person.”

“Our country is in an existential crisis driven by non-controlling executives, ignoring our constitution, our way of governing, and our way of life as citizens of the Democratic Republic,” Crockett said in a letter to Democrats. “The administration refused to respect parliamentary authority, adhere to legitimate judicial orders, or respond to the rage of the people.”
“The size of these unprecedented times justifies resistance and tactics that we have never seen before. Under Trump 2.0, we must pull back the curtains of unexempt chaos and translate our findings into Americans in a digestible way,” added Crockett.
In this letter, Crockett praised President Joe Biden, promoting his achievements in his first two tenures at home and sought the support of his colleagues.
Another rising Democratic star, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., said earlier this year he would not seek a key position on the House Oversight Committee.

“It’s actually clear that the underlying dynamics of the Caucus aren’t shifting as much as I think I need them, so I think an Ocasio-Cortez spokesman confirmed with Fox News Digital in a statement that NBC first reported.
Ocasio-Cortez lost its surveillance bid for Connolly late last year. Connolly announced his plan to retreat as a ranking member of the Oversight Committee just four months later due to the revival of esophageal cancer.
