Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, told his graduation class at Tugaloo University in Jackson, Mississippi, in a Sunday opening speech that he knows how to “use a chair” in the face of adversity.

“There are people who tell us there are no tables that don’t have seats for you, but I’m here to remind you of Montgomery and those folding chairs. Please tell us that we know how to use the chairs. [are] Either lift it up or we’re doing something else with it,” Crockett said.

In her remarks, Crockett appears to be referring to a viral video from August 2023 of a group of white sailors attacking Dameion Pickett, the captain of a black riverboat in Montgomery, Alabama. The white folding chair became a symbol of resistance when the other men raised the chair over their head in Pickett’s defense as they attacked him.

Texas Democrats on Sunday urged Black College graduation classes to lift their table seats, reminding students of a bystander who rushed to protect Pickett in the event they were attacked. Conservatives responded immediately to a clip of Crockett’s remarks, with R-Utah Sen. Mike Lee saying Crockett’s comments “isn’t cool.”

Crockett’s remarks come shortly after a controversial exchange with President Donald Trump on Sunday.

Jasmine Crockett claims Trump is “terrifying smart and bold black women” after the president’s “low IQ” jab

“To be in charge of the whole country, you certainly have a lot of my names in your mouth. Every time you say my name, you remind yourself that you are afraid that a clever and bold black woman will tell the truth and hold you accountable.

Trump on Sunday told NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker that Crockett is a “low IQ guy” and is calling her a Democrat future that described her as “confusing.”

Last week’s report showed that Crockett, currently a deputy ranking member of the House Committee on Surveillance and Government Reform, is now turning his eyes to the position of the committee’s chairman. Crockett will lead federal oversight if she gets a gig. This includes major research into Trump’s agenda.

Conservatives accused Crockett of inciting violence during Trump’s first 100 days. The Texas progressive lawmaker was criticised online earlier this year as it alluded to R-Texas Sen. Ted Cruz “have to knock on his head like Hard.”

Crockett also said Democrats are willing to “punch” with Republican races.

The White House’s quick response account responded to X’s comment, calling Crockett “incited another unhinged Democrat violence.”

Earlier this year, Attorney General Pam Bondy accused Crockett of “life-threatening” and said he should apologise for Elon Musk and his rhetoric against government efficiency (DOGE).

Crockett was also criticized this year for calling R-Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who is on the wheelchair “hot wheel governor.” She tried to return the comment by calling the statement a “distraction,” calling the rage a “distraction,” claiming that “a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and ocking people with disabilities) is now furious, calling it a “distraction.”
