Grammy-winning rapper Jay Lock was arrested Thursday evening near a public housing complex in Watts, where he grew up and booked for illegal possession of a firearm, authorities said.
According to a department spokesperson, the 39-year-old rapper was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department at 5:20pm in the 13,000 block of East 115th Street, Johnny Reed McKinsey.
The spokesman said the booking was booked on suspicion of violating California Criminal Code 29800(a)(1). This is a felony charge that can be punished in prison for up to three years.
Information regarding his next court appearance was not immediately available.
McKinzie was initially arrested at the Nickerson Gardens Public Housing Arpumment Complex and was arrested publicly on suspicion of trespassing and drinking, police sources told NBC4. He escaped from his car and police found a firearm inside, news outlet reported.
In the incident video shared on social media, you can hear the rapper say, “I don’t even know what I was drinking.”
McKinzie won a Grammy Award in 2019 for her rap performance. It’s alongside “Kings Dead,” Kendrick Lamar, Future and James Blake. That May, he was awarded the key to his hometown Watts by then-City Councilman Joe Busqueino.
During the ceremony, Buscaino declared “Jay Rock Day” on May 24th, saying that McKinzie “has made a big contribution to the success of future generations by giving back.”
