Vice President JD Vance arrived in Los Angeles on Friday to tour multiple federal centers, meet with leaders and the Marines, and make his remarks amid the attacks and protests of the US Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Southern California.
Around 3:10pm, Vance spoke to the press about why he traveled to Los Angeles, what he learned during his tour, talking on behalf of the Trump administration’s recent immigration sweep and thanking local and federal law enforcement agencies.
“The good news is that the riots have become much better, but the bad news is what I’ve heard from everyone. Unfortunately, the soldiers and Marines are still a necessary part of what’s going on here.
Vance then spoke about local and state governments, calling specifically Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass to actively encourage “illegal migration” to the Los Angeles community, and said he “breaked the law, provided benefits to immigrants who came to our country and received generous public support to do so.”
Vance then introduced the law enforcement groups around him, including representatives of the Marines, the District Attorney’s Office, the FBI and other federal officials. He said their presence is necessary because of the community unrest caused by what the Vice President described as “the basic federal action of enforcing immigration laws.”
“What happened here was a tragedy. You have people who do the simple job of enforcing the law, and they have given birth to violent people by the governor and mayor, making it difficult for them to do their jobs.
Vance then spoke directly to law enforcement and thanked them for their work, saying they believed they might be suffering from “morale issues.”
Earlier this month, Vance posted about the demonstration on social media.
“While foreign flag-carrying rebels are attacking immigration enforcement officials, half of American political leaders have determined that border enforcement is bad,” reads his June 7 post on X.
Meanwhile, local politicians, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, spoke publicly about the deployment of the Los Angeles administration’s military, saying it was unconstitutional and only burned the situation.
