An Inglewood couple is suing a major U.S. airline after a block of ice crashed through the roof of their home last year.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Day 2024 while Michael Reese and Leah Ferrarini were “peacefully spending time in their home” in the 2600 block of West 102nd Street.
The ice block, described in the lawsuit as “the size of a watermelon,” allegedly fell from a JetBlue Airways plane en route from New York to Los Angeles International Airport.
The couple said a block of ice hit their bed, but they narrowly escaped serious injury.
An investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) found that the plane had a history of drinking water problems dating back to July 2023, and that the plane had a similar incident that dumped ice on a home in Massachusetts.
“Prior to January 1, 2024, Defendants failed to investigate and correct the issues,” the complaint states.
Multiple news outlets reported that the couple is suing the airline for $1 million.
The suit notes that the defendants need a new place to live because they feel unsafe in their homes and suffer from psychological distress, including insomnia and fear every time a plane passes by.
The home is located within eight miles of LAX, where planes pass by “approximately once every five minutes,” according to the complaint.
JetBlue denies liability and says its actions complied with industry standards and regulations.
