A week-long state funeral honoring former President Jimmy Carter, who died last week at the age of 100, began Saturday morning. The ceremony will honor Mr. Carter’s journey from his hometown of Plains, Georgia, to his esteemed role on the global humanitarian stage, and as the 39th president of the United States.
On Saturday morning, people gathered in downtown Plains to lay flowers at the base of Carter’s monument. The memorial service also featured Habitat for Humanity helmets with handwritten messages such as “God bless you, Mr. President,” USA Today first reported.
The specific cause of his death on December 29 was unknown. Mr. Carter’s death followed the death of his wife, Rosalyn, on November 19, 2023. She passed away at the age of 96, surrounded by her family, at the Carter home in Plains, days after being admitted to hospice care.

The order of the funeral is as follows:
Saturday, January 4th:
●10:15 a.m.: The Carter family arrives at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia. Nine current and former Secret Service agents from the Carter administration will serve as pallbearers and escort the remains to the hearse.
•10:50 a.m.: The motorcade passes through the Plains, stopping briefly at Carter’s childhood archery home. During this hiatus, the National Park Service will ring the historic farm bell 39 times, symbolizing Carter’s tenure as the 39th president.
•10:55am: Journey to Atlanta begins.

•3 p.m.: Upon arrival in Atlanta, the motorcade will stop at the Georgia State Capitol for a moment of silence led by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, Lt. Gov. Bert Jones, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and members of the Georgia State Legislature. . General meeting.
Current and retired members of the Georgia State Patrol will gather on the steps of the Capitol, and a member who served as security guard during the Carter administration will take the position of honor.

●3:45 p.m.: An arrival ceremony will be held at the Carter Presidential Center.
•4 p.m.: A private service will be held in the lobby of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.
•7:00 p.m.: President Carter will rest at the Carter Presidential Center and the public may pay their respects until 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7th.

Subsequent services:
•January. 7th: President Carter’s remains are transported to Washington, D.C., and placed in state at the Capitol for national mourning.
•January. 9th: A national funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral, where President Joe Biden is scheduled to deliver the eulogy. Biden declared Thursday a national day of mourning.

●After the service in Washington, Carter’s remains will be returned to Georgia where a private burial will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. Afterwards, Carter will be buried next to the home of his late wife Rosalynn Carter.
