Salena Ziet, a veteran political reporter with more than 20 years of storytelling experience, tells her own story in her book “Butler: The Almost Assassination of Donald Trump and the Battle of America’s Heartland.”

Zito’s novel, released Tuesday, brought readers back on July 13, 2024, with a young shooter unleashing gunshots at a crowd at President Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“I didn’t get off,” Zito told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview before its release. “There was this inner voice saying, ‘You have work to do and you’re continuing to do it.’ ”

When 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks began firing at Trump, Jeet was dressed in the safe boundaries of the Secret Service, as Trump was making his remarks.

Fox Nation reveals unprecedented footage from an attempt to assassinate Trump in Butler

President Donald Trump rebelliously raises his fist after an assassin bullet grazes his ears during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024.

“We’re having these layers in time,” Zito said. “It doesn’t remember them. It’s going through them. It’s this interesting thing that happens. I see a sea of navy blue suits surround him right away. And I hear the second four shot. I haven’t descended yet.”

As the gun owner, Zito quickly recognized the sound of gunshots. But as a journalist, she soon began to bring historical moments to memory.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Zito explained the scenes she saw firsthand.

Just eight minutes after Trump’s speech, Jeet was standing in “buffer” with his daughter’s son-in-law and Trump’s campaign aide, Michelle Picard. It was Picard who finally brought Jeet to the ground.

“Michel Picard has put me down and lays on top of me, covering me,” Jeet explained. “This young man didn’t need to do this. He will always be a hero in my mind. He will lie on top of my daughter. My step-son has already taken my daughter down.”

Zito said that even in that advantage, Trump screamed for his shoes, someone called for the Medic and the woman screamed, so she could still see and hear the situation unfolding.

“I had a recorder on my phone because I thought I was going to record Larry, his speech. I wanted to make sure I got the nuance. I’ve always done it.

She said Trump was saying “America” from the ground when the crowd began chanting. When the Secret Service helped Trump to be on his feet, he cried out “Fight! Fight! Fight,” Jeet said he saw another side of Trump revealed in her book.

The journalist, a political reporter for the Washington Examiner, is a special contributor to the Washington Post and a columnist for the New York Post, said Trump must have made seven calls 24 hours after filming.

Jeet was scheduled to interview Trump ahead of the rally at Butler, but in the case of the presidential election schedule, interview times continued to slip. Jeet had planned to fly with Trump to Bedminster, New Jersey, to interview him after the rally.

Trump has almost recovered from assassination, with bullets not grazing in his ears thanks to the immigration charts he had turned his head. Firefighter Corey Comperatore, attendees of one rally, was killed, and the other two were seriously injured by Crooks’ gunshots.

Comperatore protected his wife and daughter from the shots and saved his family. Trump praised his family when he returned to Butler to finish the rally later that year.

“This book is for everyone,” Zito told Fox News Digital. “First of all, it was a witness to history, and it is very conversational, spoken in a very realistic and authentic way.

“But it is also a book about why understanding the place and the roots. [are] It is extremely important in American politics. Few Republicans and Democrats understand that. Whatever happens next, it is part of the American experience that will help people understand better because the light shines. ”

Deirdre Heavey is a political writer for Fox News Digital.
