A federal judge on Wednesday made clear the path to reducing the federal workforce with a resignation program that had been postponed by President Donald Trump’s plan.
Boston US District Judge George O’Toole Jr. found that union groups do not have legal status to challenge programs commonly referred to as acquisitions.
Trump wants to use financial incentives to encourage government employees to quit. Tens of thousands of workers have taken the government into its offer, according to the White House.
The postponed resignation program is spearheaded by Elon Musk, Trump’s top advisor to reduce federal spending. Under the plan, employees will be able to quit their job until September 30th and receive payments.
The union argued that the plan was illegal and asked O’Toole to hold it down and not to encourage the Human Resources Administration (OPM to sign up with more workers).
Justice Department lawyers call the plan a “humanitarian lamp” for federal employees who may have been ordered to form their lives by working remotely and return to government agencies.
